The end or a new beginning

Text message on that sweltering June afternoon brought back memories of moments spent, when she'd hoped desperately to be wrong only to be heartbroken. With a racing heart she opened to read "hi I'm in town, care to meet?".
Conflicting thoughts, teary eyed and with a half smile she looked around the room to make sure she wasn't in view of her newfound friend, within sight of the one who could read her deepest emotions no matter how hard she tried to hide it. She slowly hit the reply key-"sure", put the phone away in her pocket and put on her brightest smile.
An hour later, she looked up from her hands trying to focus on the conversation. Was it really happening, how could it seem so easy when on her way to the rendezvous, she could hardly breathe. Smiling across the table sat the man she had known for half a decade now and believed herself to be in love with. Strange that the feeling was now gone! Here he is; she thought, digging into the mud pie, talking about the girl he's about to marry. Sitting across the table from her, the girl who thought loved him. Ha! Ironic!!
Just when she thought she would break down, go hysterical both laughing and crying, making a fool of herself, her phone rang bringing her to pick it up and answer. "Hi! How are you feeling now, better I hope. You left in a hurry today and you weren't yourself? Is everything alright?" She laughed out loud, it felt good to be able to. "I'm good, thanks for calling. Better now yes. Thanks!" It seem she failed at her brightest smile today because the one could see right through her after all.

All else faded away into the background, she smiled. She'd thought it was the end but it truly was just the beginning.
